How to Weld Piezo Ceramics

There are many common metal welding methods such as fusion welding, pressure welding, brazing, etc. Piezo ceramic welding mainly uses braze welding way. By heating solder with low melting point, make it flow and infiltrate into area between wire and piezoelectric element, and they are connected together after solidify. Generally weld wires on both positive and negative electrodes of piezoelectric components, or separately weld on metal sheets and piezos. According to different requirements for large quantity and standardized piezo crystals, it can also be divided into manual welding and automated welding by equipment.

Preparation before welding piezoelectric ceramic

1) Piezos should be well packaged and don't expose to the air. Packaging can only be opened before use. Store in a light-free and non-corrosive environment, acid, alkali and sulfide will affect the metal coating. Maintain stable humidity and temperature, and ensure a storage period of less than one year.

2) Familiarize yourself with advantages and disadvantages of various welding methods, decide the appropriate welding process based on specific needs, and avoid damaging piezoelectric components due to incorrect methods.

3) Decide what welding tools and materials are needed for technological requirements, such as multimeter, soldering iron, solder wire, glue, etc. Use sandpaper to remove impurities including oxide layer on soldering tool. Before welding, test weld is required to determine the appropriate temperature.

4) Open the packaging and check the appearance of piezoelectric pieces, whether the metal electrode coating is intact, whether there is oxidation on the surface of silver electrode.

Steps of manually soldering piezoceremic

1) Cleaning. Before welding, it is necessary to wipe the dusts and contaminants on ceramic surface with alcohol or acetone to avoid influencing welding quality the welding quality.

2) Tinning. Tin a layer of solder on the tip of electroplated iron, touch the heating solder to wire until it’s completely covered.

3) Welding. Place tinning lead wire and iron in position, align the soldering wire with the silver electrode on piezo component, ensure the soldering iron contacts both lead wire and solder, quickly complete the welding process and remove the soldering set. Make sure welded parts won't be moved before solidification.

4) Inspection. Observe whether the surface of welding spot is smooth and full, whether there are any micro pores or indentations, ensure that there are no instances of virtual or false welding.

Tips on bonding wires to piezo element

1) Try to avoid contact with the coated piezo sheets with your hands directly, since sweat stains may corrode the electrodes on ceramic surface and cause oxidation.

2) Bonding temperature and time need to be well controlled. Excessive time may cause desoldering. The normal tinning time should be less than 2 seconds. Metal substrate dissipates heat relatively quickly, so add a fews tins and extend the bonding time accordingly to ensure the reliability of soldering pot, which is generally controlled within 3 seconds. The recommended welding temperature should be controlled between 280 Celsius degree and 350 Celsius degree.

3) Keep moderate pressure during the welding process. Excessive external force may result in crack on piezo ceramics and break the bonding wire. Heat solder with the tip of electric iron, do not directly touch the piezoceremics to avoid damaging it.

4) Don't use excessive flux, just control the amount to wet the solder joint. Solder paste has a certain degree of corrosiveness, so replace it with rosin as possible.
