Principle of ultrasonic level measurement
Ultrasonic level measurement operates by using high frequency sound energy to carry out testing and making
measurements. A regular level detection system consists of several functional items, such as the pulser receiver, transducer, and display units.
A piezo
crystal inside the transducer converts electrical signal into sound energy that travels as a wave at the certain frequency and at a constant speed towards a
offered medium(either solid or liquid), it will be reflected back to the transducer, which can change the sound energy returning to an electrical signal
again. Then throughout the time of transmitting and receiving sound waves, a signal processor can analyse this sound reflection and calculate the distance
from the level device to the measured object.
The main performance of ultrasonic level measurement
The performance of every level sensor for applications
will be different. So before use, we should know its performance as follows:
1) Operating frequency: The operating frequency is the resonance frequency of
piezoelectric ceramic. Once the added AC voltage frequency equates to the resonance frequency of the piezo chip, it will generate the absolute maximum
energy output and also the level of sensitivity is the best.
2) Operating temperature: Due to the extreme temperature of piezoelectric crystal is 150℃. Most of
ultrasonic level meters can't work for quite a long time Over 100℃.
3) Level of sensitivity: That mainly depends upon the chip itself. If the
Electromechanical coupling coefficient is high, the sensitivity is definitely high. Or else the sensitivity is low accordingly.
The advantages of ultrasonic level measurement
Ultrasound technological know-how is largely used for continuous level measurement devices, and also provide us the instantaneous results.
Ultrasonic level meters are really easy to install, have no moving components and are commonly non contact type, they just don't make any contact with the
target liquid or material while level detection, thus, materials compatibility troubles are avoided.
Besides, they consist of fixed components entirely
therefore require less maintenance, they are generally installed at the top of the tank with the result that they are unlikely to cause leakage issues
compared to completely wetted method.
Less influenced by target objects and surfaces, and never troubled by color. Solid-state units have practically
limitless, maintenance free life. Can easily detect smaller objects over long running distances. Effectiveness against external disturbances such as
oscillation, infrared light and ambient noises.
The application field of ultrasonic level measurement
Due to the advantages of directional ultrasonic transmitter, power and so easy to control, no need to touch with the object which being measured, it can be broadly applied in solid/liquid level
measurement.
Ultrasonic level measurement can be applied in material level and liquid level monitoring, robot collision avoidance, all varieties of ultrasonic
proximity switch, alarm system and various other fields. It really is reliable and so easy to install. Many kinds of level meters have charactoristic of
water proof, small emission angle and high sensitivity, which can easily get connected to the industrial display device and provides a ultrasonic probe
with larger angle.
